A New Tower That Inherits a Hundred Years of History

At the southern edge of Marunouchi, where the broad avenues leading to the Imperial Palace converge, a 30-story tower rises 140 meters above the street. The Marunouchi Nijubashi Building was completed in October 2018 — one of the later additions to Marunouchi’s long sequence of high-rise redevelopments. Developed by Mitsubishi Estate, the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Tokyo Kaikan, and designed by Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei, the building has a total floor area of approximately 174,000 square meters, combining offices, convention facilities, and restaurants.

The site was previously occupied by the old Tokyo Kaikan, a banquet and event venue that had shaped the social life of central Tokyo for nearly a century. Rather than erasing that heritage, the redevelopment continued it: Tokyo Kaikan reopened within the new building’s lower and mid floors, preserving the function — formal dinners, wedding receptions, corporate events — in a structure rebuilt to twenty-first-century standards.

Nijubashi Square and the Palace Approach

The building’s ground-level commercial zone, Nijubashi Square, opened in November 2018. Its name is drawn from the Nijubashi bridge of the Imperial Palace, visible just a short walk to the west. The layout is deliberate: visitors walking from the Marunouchi Naka-dori toward the palace grounds pass naturally through the space, and the building serves as a soft endpoint before the parkland begins.

Marunouchi’s high-rise cycle started in earnest in the early 2000s with the redevelopment of Marunouchi Building and its neighbors. The Nijubashi Building arrived later in that sequence, occupying the block closest to the palace and facing both the Yurakucho direction and the broad avenue leading south. Its presence completes the redeveloped streetscape at a point where commerce meets the open green buffer of the palace grounds.
