Tokyo Midtown Hibiya

Completed in February 2018, this 35-storey, 192-metre complex by Mitsui Fudosan stands on the former Sanshin Building site in Yurakucho 1-chome, Chiyoda City. Designed by Hopkins Architects as master design architect with Nikken Sekkei handling urban planning and design supervision, it faces Hibiya Park with a public plaza that links the tower to the surrounding greenery.

A High-Rise Oriented Toward Hibiya Park

Tokyo Midtown Hibiya stands at 1-1-2 Yurakucho, Chiyoda City, directly adjacent to Hibiya Park. The complex was completed in February 2018, rising 35 floors above ground and four below, to a height of approximately 192 metres, with a total floor area of about 189,800 square metres. Mitsui Fudosan led the development, working with Hopkins Architects of the UK as master design architect and Nikken Sekkei for urban planning, basic design, and design supervision.

Before construction, the site held the Sanshin Building and the Hibiya Mitsui Building — two established structures in the Yurakucho 1-chome district. The site area is approximately 12,693 square metres, consolidated through a land readjustment project. The resulting building combines a high-rise tower with a lower-level retail zone, and the public plaza at ground level faces Hibiya Park, creating a visual link between the building and the greenery beyond that is said to be one of the design’s defining intentions.

Between the Imperial Palace and Ginza

Hibiya occupies the wedge between the outer gardens of the Imperial Palace and the Ginza district — an area that has attracted theatres, government offices, and cultural institutions since the Meiji era. The Imperial Theatre and the Nissay Theatre both sit within a short walk, and Hibiya Park spans the road directly opposite. Tokyo Midtown Hibiya entered this layered urban context in 2018 as a mixed-use skyscraper combining offices and retail.

Hopkins Architects handled the exterior design for the approximately 192-metre tower, while Nikken Sekkei contributed urban planning and design supervision. The lower levels of the complex adopt a scale closer to the existing Hibiya streetscape, while the tower rises clearly above the surrounding roofline. Yurakucho Station, Hibiya Station, and the Ginza shopping district are all within easy walking distance, making the complex a convenient reference point in one of central Tokyo’s most historically layered neighbourhoods.
