A New Convention Wing for Yokohama’s MICE District
At the leading edge of the Minato Mirai 21 district in Yokohama, close to Landmark Tower and the Grand InterContinental Hotel, a large low-rise building opened in 2020. PACIFICO Yokohama North — formally the Yokohama Minato Mirai International Convention Center — is a six-story facility with roughly 46,295 square metres of floor space, built beside the existing PACIFICO Yokohama complex that opened in 1991. Construction began in August 2017 and the building was completed on 31 March 2020, with official opening in April of that year.
Design was handled by a joint venture of Sato Sogoh Planners and Takenaka Corporation, with construction carried out by Takenaka and Komata Construction. The project was commissioned by Yokohama Global MICE Corporation, a third-sector entity backed by the City of Yokohama, with the aim of significantly expanding the city’s capacity to host large-scale international conferences and exhibitions.
Strengthening Yokohama’s Position as an International MICE City
The core of PACIFICO Yokohama North is the ground-floor multi-purpose hall: approximately 6,300 square metres in area, with a maximum capacity of around 6,000 people, and flexible enough to be partitioned into eight separate zones. Floors two through four contain 42 conference rooms totalling roughly 6,185 square metres. A covered walkway connects the new building directly to the existing PACIFICO Yokohama convention centre, exhibition halls, and the adjacent Yokohama Grand InterContinental Hotel, allowing the two facilities to function as an integrated campus.
Yokohama has positioned itself as an international convention city since the early days of Minato Mirai 21. PACIFICO Yokohama’s opening in 1991 gave the city a modern anchor for that ambition. The North building represents a further step — adding the capacity needed to host events that the original facility could not accommodate alone.
The building’s low-profile design, with its emphasis on horizontal lines and a broad canopied entrance, fits comfortably alongside the towering hotels and office buildings of Minato Mirai rather than competing with them. It reads as civic infrastructure: functional, generous in its public spaces, oriented toward the waterfront.
Summary
PACIFICO Yokohama North was completed in 2020 as a six-story, 46,300-square-metre convention facility in Minato Mirai, Yokohama. Commissioned by Yokohama Global MICE Corporation and designed by Sato Sogoh Planners and Takenaka Corporation, it extends the city’s conference and event capacity that PACIFICO Yokohama established in 1991. Visiting alongside Yokohama Landmark Tower and Yokohama Grand InterContinental gives a clear sense of how Minato Mirai 21 has grown from a plan on paper into one of Japan’s most complete purpose-built urban districts.
