Music and City, Brought Together in Minato Mirai

Minatomirai 5-chome, Nishi Ward, Yokohama. A short walk from Shin-Takashima Station, the twin towers of Yokohama Symphostage were completed at the end of March 2024 on Block 53 of Minato Mirai 21. The project was co-developed by Obayashi Corporation, Keikyu Corporation, Nippon Steel Kowa Real Estate, and Yamaha Corporation, with Obayashi handling both design and construction. The West Tower rises to approximately 158 meters across 30 floors; the East Tower reaches about 90 meters across 16 floors, and the two buildings face the harbor side of Minato Mirai together.

The name Symphostage — combining “symphony” and “stage” — signals the role that Yamaha plays in defining the complex’s character. In the lower floors of the West Tower, Yamaha operates a music experience center where visitors can try instruments and engage with the brand directly. The idea of planting a music manufacturer’s cultural presence inside a Minato Mirai office complex gives the development an identity that stands apart from its neighbors.

Filling a Long-Empty Block

Block 53 had been one of the few remaining undeveloped parcels in the Minato Mirai 21 district, its vacancy long noted by those watching the area take shape over the decades. The West Tower’s upper floors (26th to 30th) house the Keikyu EX Hotel Minato Mirai Yokohama, a 150-room hotel that opened with the building. Office space occupying the West Tower’s 5th through 24th floors and the East Tower’s 3rd through 15th floors is occupied by the Yamaha Group and other tenants, including Keikyu Corporation itself.

The commercial zone at the base of the towers — restaurants, experiential brand shops, and Yamaha-related retail — creates a new point of activity along the walking route from Shin-Takashima Station toward Rinko Park. Positioned slightly west of the main cluster around Landmark Tower and Queen’s Square, the area has a quieter, less crowded feel than the heart of Minato Mirai.
