A Century-Old Crane and a Brand-New Building

Yokohama Hammerhead opened on October 31, 2019, on Shinko Pier in Naka Ward, Yokohama. The five-storey building—designed by Azusa Sekkei—brings together a CIQ-equipped international cruise terminal, two floors of shops and restaurants, and the InterContinental Yokohama Pier 8 hotel on floors three through five. The complex takes its name from the iron hammerhead crane built in 1914 that stands beside it on the waterfront, preserved as an industrial heritage monument.

The crane once hauled cargo weighing up to 150 tonnes onto ships in one of Japan’s busiest ports, and it became an unofficial symbol of Yokohama’s pre-war maritime era. Rather than demolishing it to clear the site, the developers incorporated it into the identity of the new building, letting the old crane set the tone for a facility that embraces the harbour’s history.

Harbour Regeneration at the Water’s Edge

Shinko Pier sits within easy walking distance of Yokohama’s Minato Mirai 21 area, and Yokohama Hammerhead has become part of a larger constellation of waterfront destinations that includes the Red Brick Warehouses and Yokohama World Porters. From the pier in front of the building, the Minato Mirai skyline—with the Landmark Tower prominent among its towers—stretches across the view, offering one of the most photographed vistas in the city.

The ground-floor commercial tenants lean towards Yokohama-rooted producers: local craft and food brands that make the retail floor feel less like a standard mall and more like an introduction to the port city’s food culture.

Summary

Yokohama Hammerhead, completed in 2019, is a five-storey complex on Shinko Pier that fuses a cruise terminal, retail, and a hotel with the preserved 1914 hammerhead crane. Designed by Azusa Sekkei, it offers a model of port regeneration that keeps industrial memory at the centre of the new structure. The view from the pier toward the Minato Mirai skyline is one you can spend an unhurried afternoon in front of.
