American Architects, Japanese Castle Town
Riverwalk Kitakyushu opened on April 19, 2003, along the Murasakigawa (Purple River) in Kokurakita Ward, Kitakyushu, directly adjacent to Kokura Castle — a designated national historic site. The project was designed by The Jerde Partnership, the Los Angeles firm behind projects including Canal City Hakata and Universal Studios Japan. The university wing, housing the Kitakyushu Campus of Nishinippon Institute of Technology, was designed separately by Michael Graves, the American architect known for his postmodern idiom.
The building rises 15 floors above ground (2 below ground) and covers a total floor area of approximately 178,000 square meters across a site of about 24,600 square meters. The exterior palette — earthy brown, roof-tile black, plaster white, lacquer red, and rice-straw yellow — was chosen to echo traditional Japanese craft colors and create visual dialogue with the neighboring Kokura Castle. Rather than a single monolithic block, the complex was conceived as a cluster of smaller-scaled volumes, consistent with Jerde’s philosophy of creating urban-feeling interiors.
Culture, Media, and Commerce Under One Roof
Riverwalk Kitakyushu was developed as a centerpiece of the city’s “Kitakyushu Renaissance” urban revitalization policy, at a total project cost of approximately 51 billion yen. The facility brings together an unusual range of uses: a commercial zone (Deco City), a cinema, the NHK Kitakyushu Broadcasting Station, the Kitakyushu Museum of Art annex, the Kitakyushu Arts Theater, and a university campus — all within a single structure. On the fourteenth floor, the map company Zenrin maintains its headquarters and a public museum.
A riverside promenade and open deck along the Murasakigawa connect the complex to the Kokura Castle grounds, creating a pedestrian link between the historic castle town and the contemporary development.
Summary
Riverwalk Kitakyushu (2003, 15 floors above ground) is a commercial, cultural, and educational complex designed by The Jerde Partnership and Michael Graves, symbolizing Kitakyushu’s urban renewal on the Murasakigawa waterfront beside Kokura Castle.
Another Jerde project, Canal City Hakata, offers a compelling comparison for those interested in the firm’s approach to large-scale urban entertainment design in Kyushu. For accommodation in Kitakyushu and Kokura, Rakuten Travel has a range of options nearby.
