A Witness to Osaka Hotel History on the Dojima River
Rihga Royal Hotel Osaka stands on the western tip of Nakanoshima, the slender island cradled between the Dojima River and the Tosabori River in Kita Ward, Osaka. Its lineage stretches back to 1935, when the hotel first opened under the name New Osaka Hotel. The property grew steadily through postwar reconstruction and Japan’s high-growth decades: the 15-story West Wing was completed in 1965, followed by the 30-story Tower Wing in 1973. With more than 1,000 guestrooms in total, the hotel ranked among the largest in western Japan at the time of the Tower Wing’s opening.
The setting along the Dojima riverfront places guests in the heart of what Osakans call their “city of water.” The lobby and banquet spaces retain the stately craftsmanship associated with postwar Japanese grand hotels. Nearby stand the Osaka City Central Public Hall and the Osaka Prefectural Nakanoshima Library — architectural landmarks from the Meiji and Taisho eras that underscore the cultural depth of this island district.
Nine Decades in the Heart of Nakanoshima
Over nearly ninety years of operation, the hotel has stood alongside the turning points of Osaka’s economy and civic life. Nakanoshima remains a hub for financial institutions and corporate headquarters, and the hotel’s connection to the Osaka International Convention Center (Grand Cube Osaka) via an underground walkway has reinforced its role as a preferred base for international conferences and academic gatherings.
The Tower Wing has been in continuous service since 1973, with successive renovations keeping its facilities current. Positioned on the western waterfront of Nakanoshima, the hotel offers a vantage point on the river scenery that has defined this part of Osaka for generations.
Summary
Rihga Royal Hotel Osaka traces its roots to 1935 and today centers on the 30-story Tower Wing completed in 1973. It remains a defining presence on the Nakanoshima waterfront — a place where the layers of Osaka’s modern history are still palpable.
The nearby Nakanoshima Festival Tower (2012, 39 floors) represents the district’s continuing reinvention. For hotels in the Nakanoshima and Umeda area, Rakuten Travel has a wide selection to explore.
