Fifty-Four Storeys Above the Tosabori River
In the Kitahama district of central Osaka, the Tosabori River flows between rows of low-rise brick and stone buildings that carry the memory of Meiji-era finance. Above that skyline, a single tower rises to 209 metres across 54 storeys: The Kitahama, completed in 2009 at Koraibashi 1-chome, Chuo Ward. One minute on foot from Kitahama Station on the Osaka Metro Sakaisuji Line and the Keihan Railway, the building contains 465 homes and was, at the time of its completion, among the tallest residential structures in Japan.
The design was a joint venture of four firms: Nihon Sekkei, Kajima Design, Haseko Corporation, and Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei. A project of this height and complexity invited the depth of experience that a multi-firm team could provide. The tower rises from one basement level to the fifty-fourth floor, its tapered silhouette visible from wide stretches of the Midosuji boulevard and the elevated highways that cross the Yodo River basin.
From Financial Quarter to Waterfront Residence
Kitahama has been Osaka’s financial address for more than a century. The Osaka Exchange (formerly the Osaka Securities Exchange) still stands a short walk away; 19th-century banking buildings face the canal along Kitahama Riverside. The arrival of a 54-storey residential tower in 2009 reflected a broader shift: the financial district, with its riverside position and excellent rail access, had become one of the city’s most sought-after residential locations.
From the upper floors the view reaches in every direction — the city grid to the south and east, the Namba and Shinsaibashi shopping districts visible at a distance, and on clear days the hills of the Kii Peninsula beyond the bay. Standing on the riverside promenade and looking up at the tower, the contrast between the stone facades of the heritage banking buildings and the glass skin of the skyscraper above them captures the particular character of this neighbourhood: old money and new height, side by side on the same stretch of water.
Summary
The Kitahama was completed in 2009 at Koraibashi 1-chome, Chuo Ward, Osaka, rising to approximately 209 metres across 54 storeys above one basement level. Designed by a joint venture of Nihon Sekkei, Kajima Design, Haseko Corporation, and Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei, its 465 homes placed it among Japan’s tallest residential towers at the time of completion. Walking the Tosabori River bank and looking up at this tower from the riverside promenade is one of the most direct ways to feel the scale of what has changed in Osaka’s old financial district.
