A skyscraper outside Minato Mirai

When people think of Yokohama’s skyline, the gleaming towers of Minato Mirai come to mind first. Yet a few minutes’ walk north of Yokohama Station’s east exit, in the Kanakō-chō district of Kanagawa-ku, another skyscraper has stood quietly since December 2009. This is the Yokohama Dia Building: 31 floors above ground, 2 below, rising 156.5 meters. Designed by Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei and built by Takenaka Corporation, it was developed by Mitsubishi Logistics Corporation as an environmentally conscious office tower. Floors 7 through 30 serve as office space; floors 3 through 6 house retail and commercial tenants.

Construction began in December 2007 and the building was completed roughly two years later. It sits alongside the Yokohama Bay Quarter waterfront shopping facility — opened slightly earlier — and the neighbouring Navia Yokohama Tower Residence, all three forming a coordinated district renewal by the same developer along the canal.

A logistics company reshaping its harbour land

Mitsubishi Logistics has roots stretching back to the late Meiji era, and its ties to Yokohama Port run deep. The Kanakō-chō area, once a zone of cargo handling and warehousing, now hosts a high-rise office complex — a tangible sign of a logistics company extending into property development. Yokohama Station’s eastern side has been reshaped by this kind of incremental, project-by-project renewal, running in parallel with but quite distinct from the large-scale Minato Mirai redevelopment to the south.
