A New Block on Osaki’s West Side

In January 2014, a 24-story, 110-metre office tower completed a new urban block on the south side of Osaki Station’s west exit. Named Osaki Wiz Tower, the building was designed by a joint venture of Kyoritsu Architectural Design Office and Shimizu Corporation and delivered through the Osaki Station West Exit South District Urban Redevelopment Project. The adjacent residential tower — Le Cinq Osaki Wiz Tower — was finished at the same time, and together with ground-level retail and an elderly care facility they make up the “Osaki Wiz City” district.

At 24 floors and 110 metres, Wiz Tower sits comfortably within the band of heights that has come to define Osaki’s regenerated skyline. Its office floors are configured for a wide range of tenants, and the ground-level commercial spaces connect directly to the station plaza that fronts the west exit.

Completing the West Side’s Redevelopment

The east side of Osaki Station was transformed first. Gate City Osaki opened in 1999, establishing twin towers that anchored the east plaza and drew major corporate tenants to the district. The west side followed at its own pace: Osaki ThinkPark Tower arrived in 2008, and Wiz Tower extended the progress southward six years later.

What distinguishes the west side redevelopment from the purely commercial east side is its mixed-use character. By combining offices with housing, retail, and social welfare functions in a single block, the project attempted to create something closer to a neighbourhood than a business park. The Wiz City block reflects a planning philosophy, increasingly adopted in central Tokyo during the 2010s, of weaving living and working space together rather than segregating them. The result is a district that feels inhabited at different times of day and for different purposes, not just during business hours.
