An Unlikely Combination in Otemachi

Otemachi Financial City Grand Cube, the third phase of the Otemachi Chain-Type Urban Regeneration Project, was completed in April 2016 in 1-chome Otemachi, Chiyoda City. The main tower rises 31 floors above ground, four below, to a height of approximately 168 meters, with a gross floor area of around 193,800 square meters. The project was led by Mitsubishi Estate, with design by Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei and NTT Facilities, and construction by Toda Corporation. What sets this building apart from other Otemachi towers is the presence of Hoshinoya Tokyo, which opened in July 2016 in the adjacent hotel block.

Hoshinoya Tokyo defines itself as a “tower ryokan” — a Japanese inn stacked vertically in a high-rise structure, distinct from both business hotels and international luxury chains. Its concept is rooted in traditional hospitality, with rooms arranged as if they were inn-style suites and a rooftop open-air bath fed by the Otemachi hot spring. The idea of soaking in an onsen within Tokyo’s financial district while looking over the city is, in urban planning terms, genuinely unusual. The contrast between the financial office block and the classical inn experience it contains is part of what gives this address its character.

Completing the Chain

The Grand Cube’s site once held facilities associated with Japan’s policy finance infrastructure. With its completion, the principal phases of the Otemachi chain redevelopment came to an end. Positioned to the east of the Financial City North and South towers, it extended the continuous high-rise zone from central Otemachi toward Kitanomaru. The sequence of three phases — 2009, 2012, 2016 — transformed what had been a cluster of aging postwar office buildings into one of Tokyo’s most concentrated modern business districts in under a decade.

Summary

Otemachi Financial City Grand Cube was completed in April 2016 — 31 floors above ground, approximately 168 meters tall. Designed by Mitsubishi Jisho Sekkei and NTT Facilities, it brought the Otemachi chain redevelopment to a close while also introducing an unexpected element: a high-rise ryokan in the middle of Tokyo’s financial district. The Otemachi and Marunouchi area provides plenty of hotel options at every level, making it a comfortable base for exploring the surrounding streetscape on foot.
