In the fourth block of Ebisu, Shibuya City, a 40-story tower stands at the center of a complex built where the Sapporo Beer Yebisu brewery once operated. Yebisu Garden Place Tower was completed in August 1994, designed by Kume Sekkei and developed by Sapporo Real Estate Development. It rises to approximately 167 meters, with a total floor area of roughly 162,000 m². Office space runs from the 5th to the 37th floor, while the 38th and 39th floors are occupied by restaurants and dining facilities.

The tower is the vertical landmark of the Yebisu Garden Place complex — a mixed-use district that also includes the Westin Tokyo hotel, shopping and dining facilities, a cinema, and generous public plazas. The complex is linked to Ebisu Station by a moving walkway, offering a calm approach that contrasts with the busier commercial corridors of the surrounding district.

From Industry to City: The Remaking of Yebisu

The former Yebisu brewery occupied a large site in what would become one of Tokyo’s more desirable residential and commercial quarters. After the brewery ceased operations, the Sapporo group undertook an integrated redevelopment of the entire site, creating a mixed program of offices, hotel, retail, and public space that opened in 1994.

Kume Sekkei’s design for the tower opted for a measured curtain-wall expression that sits quietly within the ensemble. The stacked horizontal bands of the facade read as understated beside the more assertive geometries of the Nishi-Shinjuku towers completed around the same period. At the base, plazas and landscaped paths connect the tower to the hotel, shops, and cinema of the surrounding complex, creating a coherent walkable precinct that feels distinct from the denser commercial core of Shibuya a short walk away.
