A New Gateway at Dogenzaka Crossing

Walk out of Shibuya Station’s Hachiko exit toward Dogenzaka and a glass-clad tower commands the corner. Shibuya Fukuras opened its commercial floors on 5 December 2019, three years after the old Tokyu Plaza Shibuya closed in 2015. The building rises 18 stories above ground, four below, to a height of approximately 104 metres. Design and construction were handled by Shimizu Corporation, with Tokyu Fudosan and Tokyu Corporation as co-developers.

The predecessor, Tokyu Plaza Shibuya, opened in 1965 and served for half a century as a landmark on the western side of Shibuya Station. Rather than erasing that identity, the redevelopment preserved the Tokyu Plaza name in the new retail zone that spans from basement level to floor 10. Upper floors accommodate offices and a hotel.

The West Side of a Decade-Long Transformation

Shibuya’s redevelopment has unfolded across multiple projects simultaneously. Shibuya Hikarie to the east opened in 2012, and Shibuya Scramble Square to the south-east reached its first phase in 2019. Shibuya Fukuras anchors the western approach — the Dogenzaka side — completing a ring of major projects around the station that collectively remade one of Tokyo’s busiest intersections.

Its contribution is less about sheer scale than about continuity. The corner position, the rooftop terrace echoing its predecessor, and the Tokyu Plaza branding give the area a legible anchor from which visitors can orient themselves before heading up Dogenzaka or into the back streets beyond.
